Making a granny square is a popular and relatively simple technique in crochet. Here's a basic guide to making a granny square:
Material:
- Crochet hook of the appropriate size for your yarn.
- Yarn in colors of your choice.
Step-by-step Guide:
Step 1: Start with a Magic Ring: Start by making a magic ring. This is done by wrapping the yarn around your fingers and creating a loop. Insert your crochet hook through the loop, pull up a loop and start making a chain to lock the ring.
Step 2: First Round: a. Make three chain stitches (this is often counted as a double crochet). b. Make two double crochets in the ring. c. Make three chain stitches. d. Repeat steps b and c two more times (total of three groups of double crochets and chain stitches). e. Tighten the ring by pulling the thread.
Step 3: Change Color (Optional): If you want to use multiple colors in your granny square, cut the thread and attach the new color to one of the three chain stitches from the previous round.
Step 4: Second Round: a. Make three chain stitches. b. Make two double crochets in the same chain stitch loop. c. Make three chain stitches. d. Make three double crochets in the same chain stitch loop. e. Repeat step bd in each corner (a total of four groups of double crochets and chain stitches). f. Tighten the thread.
Step 5: Repeat: Continue repeating steps 3 and 4, changing colors when desired, and increasing the number of rounds depending on how large you want your granny square to be. Each turn increases the number of sides by four.
Step 6: Finish: Once you've reached your desired size, cut the yarn, attach the threads and your granny square is complete!
Granny Squares can be used individually or sewn together to create blankets, pillows or other projects. There are also many variations and patterns to experiment with as you become more familiar with the technique. Good luck with your crochet project!
